About

Hi there,

I won’t bore you for long with the standard about me chat… School in Shrewsbury, uni in Newcastle, journo college in London.

As with many people, I think I have emerged with a pretty rounded education but I have also left with a head full of sporting ambitions, some realistic, most not!

As a kid I always wanted to be a pro cricketer. As any person with a brother of a similar age will tell you, one’s competitve insticts are forged in the garden.

This was certainly the case with Sam and I. I have fond memories of the glorious summer of 1998 when my control over the windball was jedi-like and my second slip (a deck chair) had the hands of a surgeon!

But, these aspirations blew up when it turned out that my cricketing peak came when I was 12. Not even India would pick someone that young.

So, the dream progressed from player to writer and thankfully, I think have improved that since I was 12.

Cricket is still the Holy Grail of my writing ambitions. Touring with the Barmy Army, not to mention Graeme Swann, in tropical climates is hard to beat.

But, there are many other ports of call where it would be rude to not take in on the way to the MCG. Take following a Lions tour, the Football World Cup (C’mon England), and a trip to Cheltenham in March for starters.

So many great events, so little time. Fingers crossed this blog will help all of you lucky readers enjoy them with me…..

Enjoy…..

    Hi Jack,

I heard you’re holding a lecture at Shrewsbury School (my old school) in the next couple of weeks, so I thought I’d scower your blog and drop you a comment. I’m hoping to drop by and sit in on the lecture which I believe is available to outside schools.

I myself am an avid football and cricket fan and I too have great ambitions to be a sports writer/journalist. I also have a wordpress blog called The Column (http://thecolumnblogpage.wordpress.com/) so it’s great to see a fellow ex-Salopian doing similar things to myself.

May I ask what you studied at Newcastle University, and whether you felt it had any impact on your future career as a journalist/writer?
